The name Kilflynn comes from Cill Flainn which means Church of the Oratory of Flainn. It is believed the village is called after St Flann a hermit monk that lived near the village.

The early settlement of the village was at the nothern side of the current village between the townlands of Ballyconnell,Castletown, and Glenballyma. Its present day location is in the banks of the river Shannow.

In 1901 the village consisted of 2 publicans, 2 shopkeepers, a bootmaker and a postmaster. Little has chaned in 100 years there still is 2 publicans 1 shop a postmaster but the bootmaker is gone.
